Description

A weary Cyril Crichton steps off a Channel steamer after three years away, the gray October air echoing his own sense of disquiet. He hurries to catch a train, only to be thrown into the lap of a veiled stranger when the carriage doors slam shut. The woman’s sudden gasp and the flash of sapphire eyes reveal a striking beauty marred by a fresh bruise, and her panic when he mentions his own surname hints at a deeper, unsettling link.

As the two strangers grapple with shock and curiosity, the lady’s frantic insistence that she knows someone named Crichton raises more questions than answers. Is she a frightened victim, a conspirator, or something in between? The encounter sets Cyril on a path through hidden family ties, secret motives, and a web of intrigue that threatens to upend the quiet life he hoped to resume.

Elizabeth Kent

1875–1947

A largely forgotten early 20th-century mystery writer, she published twisty, accessible novels that still read briskly today. Her best-known surviving titles, The House Opposite and Who?, helped keep her name alive through public-domain and audiobook editions.
