CHAPTER X
A seventeen‑year‑old Sioux warrior sets out at the first warm moon, dressed in bright leggings, a bear‑skin robe and a feathered tail that marks his lineage. Grandson of the famed chief Wolf Robe, he carries a bow, a war shield and a pony festooned with hawk feathers, eager to visit the Minneconjoux camp where his friends Sun Bird and Little Raven await. The season promises buffalo herds, and his heart swells with the pride of a young man who has already earned a reputation for daring deeds.
As he rides away from cheering villagers, the rider’s confidence is tested by a curious encounter with the “Underground People,” a bustling community of prairie dogs that dart into their burrows at his approach. He pauses, offers a friendly greeting, and watches the shy creatures inch back into view, amused by their timidity. The journey westward, guided by stories of Curly Horse and the medicine‑man Rain Crow, promises further trials and the chance to deepen bonds forged in past adventures.
