Set against a rugged Atlantic shoreline, the story begins with Bella, a maid from a grand inland house, and Terry, a groom who knows the coast like the back of his hand. On a wind‑scarred slab of rock they call Yeough Flag, the two share a quiet moment punctuated by local lore, the crash of waves, and the salty scent of seaweed. Amid the cliffs and drifting cormorants, Terry finally asks Bella to marry him, turning a simple holiday into a decisive crossroads for both.
The narrative drifts through their tentative courtship, blending vivid description of the landscape with the characters’ plain‑spoken dialect. As they scramble for tiny shrimp in tide‑pools, the tension between expectation and reality swells like the tide itself. The opening paints a tender portrait of love blooming in a raw, unforgiving setting, inviting listeners to linger over every wind‑blown detail.
