Description

In the rolling hills five miles from Rushmore, Dr. Philip Northmore has turned a modest farm into the heart of his family's life. When the wheat harvest arrives, the usual bustle of threshing is complicated by a sudden visit from distant relatives, leaving his wife overwhelmed and the dinner for the workers uncertain. The doctor’s teenage daughters, Esther and Kate, are urged to take charge, but they soon discover that the task will require more than youthful enthusiasm.

Enter Mrs. Elwell, a neighbor whose generosity and practical sense offer a lifeline. Together the girls and the seasoned women of the community organize a lively harvest feast, navigating the challenges of a hot July day, a fiery threshing machine, and the expectations of a close‑knit rural town. The story captures the warmth of cooperation, the bittersweet transition to adulthood, and the simple beauty of country life.
