Set at the outset of a spontaneous 1840 expedition, the narrator leaves Paris with a promise of a stay in Spain, yet finds himself already racing toward Bordeaux. The early leg of the journey is painted with vivid sketches of the French countryside: striped fields that resemble a tailor’s swatches, villages perched in rocky hollows, and troglodyte dwellers whose chimneys sigh smoke from the ground itself. Brief stops at Chartres and the winding streets of Château‑Regnault reveal regional quirks, from stone‑carved homes to towers that lean on each other for support.
When the carriage reaches Tours, the Loire stretches beneath a soft blue sky, its surface marked by a thin white line of a gentle cascade. The city’s skyline, with gothic spires and rounded towers, recalls a distant Moscow, while white‑sailed boats glide lazily on the water. The narrator feels a growing anticipation for the Spanish lands ahead, even as he savors the charm of each French stop.

1811–1872
A vivid voice of 19th-century French literature, this poet, novelist, and critic helped shape the idea of “art for art’s sake.” His writing moves easily from lush fantasy and historical fiction to sharp art criticism and travel writing.
