Description

Elma, an orphan raised under the watchful eye of her aristocratic uncle Sir Thomas Alfreton, spends her Wednesday afternoons at the grand house on Park Lane. Though she is called “the wise one” by the family, the nickname puzzles both servants and guests, hinting at a quiet intelligence that sets her apart from the idle chatter of Haverstock Hill. In the elegant drawing‑rooms and sunlit gardens, she navigates the expectations of a life of privilege while holding on to the memory of the distant Miss Exeter, the woman promised to guide her upbringing.

As the weeks pass, Elma’s witty observations draw the attention of her cousins, the charming Piers and the ever‑observant Juliet, who tease her about her reputation. Their playful banter masks a growing curiosity about the girl who seems to understand more than her years suggest. Between garden strolls, tea parties, and the looming prospect of a new dress, Elma’s gentle humor and keen insight promise to weave her into the family’s tangled tapestry.
