Description

A quiet island once hidden in a lagoon has been tethered to the mainland, its former monastery now a noisy storage hall where steam pumps hiss and ancient cypresses stand like weather‑worn sentinels. The narrator, a young Finnish painter and poet named Peter Adelsvärd, drifts through Venice’s shimmering waterways, searching for a hint of the vanished serenity that once filled the cloister’s gardens. He wonders how the faint perfume of blossoms can drift across the empty canals, far from the bustling public parks that now surround the city.

Guided by his gondolier, Rigo, Peter discovers a neglected garden on the former monastic island, overgrown with moss‑covered walls and crumbling marble steps. The scene is a tapestry of decay and lingering beauty, inviting him to set down his sketchbook and simply observe. As the water laps at the ruined walls, the atmosphere awakens a bittersweet yearning that hints at deeper stories yet to unfold.
