A boy born into poverty in late‑19th‑century Finland knows only the cold uncertainty of a world without parents. When he is taken in by the kindly yet struggling Ramm couple, he experiences his first true home—a modest roadside cottage where the rhythm of daily work and the warmth of simple meals give him a fleeting sense of belonging. In that early sanctuary he runs with other children, discovers the joy of playful rivalry in the stables, and forms lasting bonds with the farm girls who become his companions.
Yet the fragile peace is constantly tested. A handful of harsher figures—an overbearing farmhand and a resentful matriarch—loom over his days, reminding him that his status as a “found” child leaves him vulnerable to fear and exclusion. These contrasting encounters shape his resilient spirit and set the stage for the struggles and aspirations that will follow.
