Description

A seasoned detective is summoned to the sleek office of a venerable banker, who worries that something is amiss with his finances. Their conversation hints at a hidden deficit and a delicate matter that must stay out of prying ears, while the banker’s charming stenographer, Belle Braddon, flits in and out, her striking looks and sharp mind catching the detective’s keen eye.

As the two men trade barbed remarks, a subtle power play emerges: the detective’s instinct tells him that the attractive young woman is more than a mere clerk, and the banker’s nervous smile suggests he’s aware of secrets that could topple his reputation. The stage is set for a puzzling chase through the world of high‑society banking, where loyalties are tested and every clue could be the key to uncovering a dangerous scheme.

Best known as the shared pen name behind the classic Nick Carter detective adventures, this byline helped shape one of the most popular dime-novel sleuths in American popular fiction. Rather than belonging to one writer, it stood for a long-running storytelling tradition built by multiple hands.
