Nicholas (House name) Carter

Best known as the house name behind many early Nick Carter detective stories, this byline covered a fast-moving stream of dime novels and pulp adventures that helped shape popular mystery fiction. Rather than one single writer, it was used by several contributors working on the long-running series.

About the author

"Nicholas Carter" was a publishing house name used for the hugely popular Nick Carter detective stories, not the personal name of one author. The byline appeared on large numbers of dime novels and story papers built around the fictional detective Nick Carter, a character who became a fixture of popular entertainment from the late 1800s into the early 1900s.

Because it was a shared name, different writers contributed to books and serialized stories credited to Nicholas Carter. Project Gutenberg’s catalog also reflects that mix, listing works under the house name and, in some cases, alongside individual collaborators.

The Nick Carter stories are often linked to writer John R. Coryell, who is associated with the character’s earliest period. Even so, the name "Nicholas Carter" is best understood as a brand for a long-running series rather than as the identity of one biographical person.
