Description

Aboard the iron‑clad steamer Pericles, a cargo line that shuttles Chile’s rich nitrates, silver and hides to distant ports, life is anything but smooth. Captain Fisher, a towering figure with a perpetually sour demeanor, runs his crew with an iron fist, backed by his ambitious first mate, Silas Hoover. Their relentless hazing has left the ship’s men restless, teetering on the edge of mutiny.

Enter James Douglas, the ship’s young second mate. Orphaned early and risen through the ranks from apprentice to officer, he commands a quiet respect that the crew craves. His friendship with the cynical third engineer, Terence O’Meara, offers a rare oasis of camaraderie amid Fisher’s tyranny. When the captain summons Douglas to the bridge, the tension between authority and defiance sharpens, hinting at a storm that could change more than just the ship’s course.

Set against the restless South Atlantic and the looming conflict between Chile and Peru, the story captures the gritty reality of maritime labor, personal ambition, and the fragile bonds that hold a crew together.
