Description

A young midshipman awakens to the clamor of a midnight watch aboard the HMS Althea, where orders are shouted, coffee is demanded, and a boisterous crew member—full of wit and swagger—offers a running commentary in a thick Caribbean dialect. The opening scene mixes slap‑stick mishaps, like a misplaced bar of soap in a steaming cup, with the tense rhythm of a ship cutting through the dark Atlantic under a thin crescent moon. Through witty dialogue and vivid sensory details, the novel instantly captures the gritty camaraderie and restless ambition of life at sea.

Soon the crew’s routine is shattered when a mysterious figure known as Black Peter is summoned, hinting at a hidden danger lurking beyond the horizon. As the frigate sails toward the West Indies, the promise of treasure, treachery, and high‑seas intrigue begins to coil around our protagonist, who must navigate both the perils of naval duty and the lure of piracy. The stage is set for a swashbuckling adventure that will test loyalties, courage, and the true cost of a sailor’s honor.
