Description

Set in a bustling tavern on the outskirts of Valladolid in 1594, this three‑act verse drama opens with the innkeeper Burgoa receiving a mysterious, silver‑clad stranger and his young companion. The Marquis of Tavira, cloaked in intrigue, delivers cryptic instructions about hospitality, gold, and silence, hinting at hidden loyalties and dangerous bargains. Through the lyrical exchanges of servants, soldiers, and aristocrats, the play establishes a tense atmosphere where money, honor, and betrayal are in constant balance.

As the night deepens, the guest’s pale countenance and eagle‑sharp gaze unsettle the patrons, while a teenage lady serves as a silent page, her presence adding both grace and suspicion. The dialogue, rendered in poetic rhythm, weaves together humor, warning, and a looming sense of destiny, inviting listeners to picture the flickering candlelight and the subtle power struggles behind every toast. This opening promises a richly textured portrait of Spain’s Golden Age, where personal ambition collides with the larger currents of war and loyalty.
