Description

A young Edward Laurence returns to his family’s newly‑settled farm, Bella Vista, after a long ride among the sheep. His father, Henry, an ex‑colonel wounded at Waterloo, has left a military life behind to carve out a future on the South African veld. With the help of a Scottish friend, the family emigrated in 1818, buying a modest homestead and re‑naming it for the breathtaking views that stretch from rugged mountains to distant seas.

The narrative paints the landscape in sweeping detail—the blue‑rimmed Tandjes Berg, the rolling bush‑clad plateau, and the sparkling streams that feed the Great Fish River. Amid this beauty, the narrator senses an undercurrent of unease, hinting at challenges that the remote farm and its inhabitants will soon face. Listeners are invited to step into a world where ambition, love, and the harsh realities of frontier life intertwine, setting the stage for an unfolding African saga.
