Description

Two brothers, Julian and Frank, grow up under the shadow of their late Colonel father and a household ruled by an indulgent aunt who offers little guidance beyond blind assent. At sixteen and twelve, the boys share a striking likeness but reveal very different temperaments—Julian’s easy confidence contrasts with Frank’s youthful caution. When the call to arms comes, they are swept into Napoleon’s massive invasion of Russia, carrying with them the weight of family loss and the hope of proving themselves.

Amid the thunder of cannon at Smolensk and the brutal clash at Borodino, the brothers confront the grim realities of war, forging bonds with comrades and encountering a mysterious countess who becomes a fleeting refuge in the frozen landscape. As the Grande Armée turns back toward a hostile winter, Julian and Frank must navigate hunger, betrayal and the relentless snow, learning what courage truly means when survival itself becomes a battlefield.
