Description

A modest clerk turned private eye finally steps out of the shadows of his former railway office and opens a tiny, frosted‑glass door on Fortieth Street, branding it simply “B. Enderby.” He’s a man past his youthful prime, armed with a fire‑proof file, a taste for the theater, and a yearning to prove himself beyond the ordinary grind. While waiting for a big case, his quiet office becomes a casual hangout for strangers and a place to study the underbelly of crime.

Everything changes when a chance encounter with the celebrated actress Irma Hamerton leaves the fledgling investigator both stunned and intrigued. Her unexpected tears spark a curiosity that drags him into a tangled web of intrigue far beyond the petty jobs he’d hoped to avoid. As he follows the first clues, the story offers a witty, street‑level glimpse into the making of a detective who is anything but a sensational hero.
