Description

The story opens on a bright morning on the open prairie, where two eager boys, Hal and Ned, race to the corral at the sound of a mustang herd thundering across the grass. Their rivalry over who spoke first quickly fades into shared wonder as they watch the sleek black stallion and a fiery bay mare being lassoed by Manuel, the seasoned Mexican herder. With the ponies finally secured, the boys imagine the freedom of riding across the endless horizon.

Guided by their adult companion, the boys learn the art of handling the spirited horses, a lesson that hints at the tougher challenges awaiting them beyond the ranch. The narrative paints vivid pictures of the rolling plains, the distant mountains, and the distant drums of the Indian tribes that still roam these lands. As Hal and Ned prepare to set out, the promise of adventure, danger, and discovery begins to stir, inviting listeners to join their first steps on the trail.
