In the early 1740s the Merrimack River region teeters on the edge of chaos. Two colonial powers—Massachusetts and New Hampshire—lay claim to a narrow strip of forested land, each granting parcels to loyal settlers while old grievances simmer beneath the canopy. Scotch‑Irish families, refugees from the wars of the British Isles, carve out a town they call Londonderry, while stern Puritan neighbors from Massachusetts stake their claim on Tyng Township. The uneasy peace of the post‑Lovell era frames a world where every treaty is as fragile as winter frost.
The story opens with Norman McNiel, a nineteen‑year‑old son of the Scottish Highlands, perched on the rocky summit of Rimmon, listening to a distant hound. He carries memories of a storm‑tossed childhood in Northern Ireland and the weight of his grandfather’s legacy, the last of the MacDonalds of Glencoe. As he scans the wilderness, the clash of cultures and the looming threat of violence stir his restless spirit. Though frontier promises freedom, Norman soon discovers that loyalty, land, and survival are tangled in a rivalry that could ignite at any moment.
