At a quiet village school in rural France, young François Seurel’s sheltered life is transformed by the arrival of Augustin Meaulnes, an older, daring student whose presence quickly captivates everyone around him. Known as “the Wanderer,” Meaulnes possesses an air of restless independence and mystery that draws François into his orbit.
After setting out on an errand, Meaulnes becomes lost and stumbles upon a strange, dreamlike gathering at a remote estate. Amid music, costumes, and youthful celebration, he encounters an unforgettable girl and glimpses a world that seems to belong to another time. When he finally returns, he is determined to recover the lost path to that enchanted place, while François becomes both his devoted friend and the keeper of his secret. Blending rural realism with the shimmering logic of memory and adolescence, this evocative coming-of-age story explores longing, friendship, and the pursuit of an ideal that may never quite be reached.
