In the quiet Sussex village of Little Fittledean, the Jettan family’s legacy looms over a solitary white house perched on a gentle slope. Sir Thomas Jettan, a proud patriarch, has transformed the once‑bare structure into a sprawling, ivy‑clad estate he christens ‘Jettan’s Pride’, hoping it will finally tether his line to a respectable home. Yet his neighbours tease him, and his own children view the house with a mixture of amusement and indifference.
When Sir Thomas dies, his will forces his two wayward sons, Maurice and Thomas, to confront the expectation that one of them will settle the estate before turning fifty. Maurice, a flirtatious dandy, vows to marry and claim the house, while his younger brother scoffs at the idea of domesticity, preferring the carefree life he’s always known. Their banter and rivalry set the stage for a comic battle of wills, as the Jettan brothers navigate love, duty, and the stubborn pride of their ancestral home.
