High above the snow‑capped Caucasus, a lone figure hangs from massive iron shackles, his fate sealed by an eagle’s shadow. The bird swoops, then inexplicably releases its captive, sending him spiraling into an abyss that miraculously deposits him on a sun‑dappled meadow. Disoriented and bound, he awakens to a world of unfamiliar light, wind, and the faint rustle of grass that has never before touched his eyes.
As he steadies himself, a striking, otherworldly maiden appears—lithe as an antelope, fierce as a dryad, her presence both alluring and unsettling. Their conversation quickly turns to language and myth: he declares himself a worshipper of Zeus, while she, baffled, questions his knowledge of Homer and Plato. Their clash of cultures and the mystery of the bonds that still hold him set the stage for a journey that will test the limits of belief, freedom, and the thin line between mortal folly and divine intrigue.

A lifelong British Museum librarian who also wrote poetry, biography, criticism, and imaginative fiction, he brought a scholar’s curiosity and a storyteller’s touch to everything he did. His work moves easily between literary history and playful invention, which helps explain why he still feels surprisingly fresh.
