Description

Pamela Mardale moves through the elegant winter of Leicestershire and the glittering streets of Monte Carlo with a restless curiosity that sets her apart from her peers. While most see her as spirited and healthy, two observant friends—Alan Warrisden and a humble schoolmaster from the hillside village of Roquebrune— sense that something deeper lies beneath her polished exterior.

The schoolmaster, who once penned a modest brochure about his village, is summoned to the imposing Villa Pontignard, where Madame Mardale awaits. As he grapples with nervous propriety and the promise of a new connection, the story unfurls a delicate dance of social intrigue, hidden ambitions, and the quiet yearning for purpose that drives its characters.

Through richly drawn settings and a keen eye for the subtleties of early‑twentieth‑century society, the novel invites listeners to accompany Pamela and her acquaintances as they navigate the fine line between appearance and reality, hinting at mysteries that may soon surface.
