Born in London on May 7, 1865, Alfred Edward Woodley Mason studied at Trinity College, Oxford, and first tried acting before turning to writing. That switch paid off: he became a successful novelist and playwright, with a gift for suspense, atmosphere, and moral conflict.
His most famous book, The Four Feathers (1902), made a lasting impression with its story of courage, shame, and redemption. Mason also created Inspector Hanaud of the French Sûreté, a lively and intuitive detective who appeared in novels such as At the Villa Rose and The House of the Arrow. Those books made him an important early figure in detective fiction.
Mason's life reached beyond literature. He served as a Liberal Member of Parliament from 1906 to 1910, and during the First World War he worked in intelligence roles. He died on November 22, 1948, but his best-known novels still stand out for their pace, drama, and strong sense of character.
