Born in Camberwell, London, in 1865, Alfred Edward Woodley Mason studied at Trinity College, Oxford, and first trained as an actor before turning to writing. That theatrical background shows in the strong scenes and clear storytelling that made his novels so widely read.
He wrote across several genres, but he is especially remembered for The Four Feathers and for creating Inspector Hanaud, a detective who became one of the notable sleuths of early crime fiction. Mason also served as a Liberal member of Parliament for Coventry from 1906 to 1910, giving him a public career alongside his literary one.
His work remained popular for decades and inspired a number of film adaptations, especially The Four Feathers. He died in 1948, leaving behind novels that still appeal to readers who enjoy classic adventure, intrigue, and elegant old-fashioned suspense.
