In the sweltering night of May 1680, the streets of Tangier hum with tension as Moorish forces press against the dwindling English forts. Inside the Main‑Guard, a weary surgeon fresh from the ship Bonetta joins a trio of officers—Major Shackleton, Lieutenant Scrope, and Captain Tessin—who pass the hours playing bassette and puffing on pipes while the distant fleet’s lights flicker over the bay. Their conversation drifts between idle chatter and the grim reality that the next day may see another stronghold fall, leaving the fate of every Christian in the town hanging by a thread.
Amid the smoke and camaraderie, Surgeon Wyley becomes fascinated by Lieutenant Scrope, a man whose outward reserve masks a restless inner fire. Their dialogue turns to the eerie effects of a concussion, where a victim loses whole hours of consciousness, leaving only the unsettling question of what might have been done in those missing moments. The officer’s sharp mind and hidden turmoil hint at deeper conflicts, promising a story where duty, memory, and moral choice intersect on the edge of an uncertain siege.
