A remote mountain road, painstakingly carved through sheer cliffs, becomes the catalyst for a volatile clash on the frontier of a contested empire. When the route is suddenly cut off, supplies to the isolated outpost vanish, and news of a rebellion spreads from the high passes to the distant halls of British officials. The tension is palpable as both local leaders and distant administrators scramble to react, each viewing the road as either a lifeline or a threat.
At the heart of the drama is Charles Luffe, a seasoned but solitary civil servant whose blunt temperament and lack of allies make him an unlikely hero. Tasked with rallying troops and navigating treacherous politics, he must confront the stubborn pride of the Chiltis—a genteel yet ruthless people whose loyalty is as shifting as the snow‑bound passes. As winter tightens its grip, the fragile balance between ambition, duty, and survival hangs on whether Luffe can reach the stranded engineers before the valley’s unrest erupts into full‑scale conflict.
