A brooding, stone‑capped mansion looms amid the pines of Pinelands, its long hallways and shadowed corners setting the stage for a quietly unsettling mystery. The story is narrated by an elderly guardian, a widower whose rheumatism and sense of duty keep him lingering in the old house as a wedding approaches, and his uneasy sleep is haunted by the whispered claim of a resident “poltergeist.” Within the walls, a nervous aunt, a timid sister, and a indifferent nurse each conceal fears that the newcomer’s arrival only amplifies.
When the young couple’s plans for a bright future collide with the house’s unsettling atmosphere, the old man’s observations turn into a reluctant sleuthing mission. He pieces together strange sounds, odd behaviors, and whispered rumors, all while wrestling with his own sense of usefulness and the looming question of who—or what—should protect the vulnerable women of the household. The first act builds a tension between domestic concerns and a subtle, creeping dread, inviting listeners to follow the clues before the true nature of the trouble at Pinelands is revealed.
