Description

The narrative begins as the vessel slips away from New Zealand’s rugged shoreline, charting a mesmerising stretch of coast from Cape Turnagain past Cape South and back into the entry of Cook’s Strait. The captain’s keen eye records cliffs that rise like table‑tops, low green flats that hug the sea, and the subtle shifts in wind that shape each day’s progress.

Soon the crew meets the island’s Māori inhabitants, whose canoes cut the water with practiced ease. Their daily life unfolds in vivid detail: woven garments, intricate ornaments, communal feasts, and songs that echo across the bays. The explorer also reflects on their farming, weaponry and belief systems, even questioning the long‑held notion of a southern continent beyond these lands.

As the journey turns westward, the ship departs New Zealand for the unfamiliar coast of Botany Bay. Early impressions of the new shoreline, its flora and the people who dwell there hint at the broader adventure that lies ahead, inviting listeners to travel alongside one of history’s most famous voyages of discovery.
