A weary city doctor, fresh from three years of intensive hospital work, accepts a three‑month substitute posting in a remote Pennsylvanian village. The little station, the dusty road, the handful of shops and the dense, oak‑filled woods that frame the doctor's new home promise quiet and a break from urban strain. Yet the silence is broken by the locals' wary glances and whispered talk of an odd light flickering among the trees.

Soon he finds himself drawn into a series of unsettling incidents—a sudden, muffled call from the forest, the discovery of a cyclist’s lifeless body near the mill dam, and rumors of a hidden laboratory deep in the woods.
