Description

Born into Rome’s elite in the early fifth century, Boethius rose to the highest offices before falling under the suspicion of the Ostrogothic king. While awaiting execution in a Pavia prison, he composed a dialogue that weaves poetry, logic, and personal grief into a timeless meditation on fortune and virtue. This first part of the volume presents his five theological treatises, where he bridges Platonic and Aristotelian ideas to lay early groundwork for medieval scholastic thought.

The Consolation of Philosophy follows as a lyrical conversation between the imprisoned author and Lady Philosophy, exploring the fickleness of external success and the constancy of inner wisdom. Boethius draws on classical sources yet fashions an original argument that reason can sustain the soul when worldly fortunes turn cruel. Listeners will hear a serene yet probing voice that invites reflection on the nature of happiness, justice, and the eternal order beyond temporal power.
