FREDERICK WARNE - First published 1908 (Originally published in U.S.A. as The Roly-Poly Pudding)
Mrs. Tabitha Twitchit is a frazzled mother cat whose kittens seem to vanish into the very walls of their ancient, creaky home. As the house groans with secret stairways and dusty cupboards, Tabitha’s frantic searches turn the kitchen into a maze of whispers, rustling flour, and the occasional clatter of hidden doors. Her worry deepens when the youngest, Tom Kitten, disappears, leaving her to call on a neighbor for help.
Meanwhile, the remaining kittens, Moppet and Mittens, tumble into mischief of their own making. They pounce on a rising dough, hide in flour barrels, and conceal themselves in empty jars, all while a sly, cheese‑loving rat prowls the pantry, pilfering butter and a rolling pin. The unlikely duo of Tabitha and Mrs. Ribby must untangle the chaos, track down the missing kittens, and outwit the audacious rodent before the kitchen’s culinary plans crumble.
