Description

In the bustling heart of Chicago, a shadowy gang is blackmailing the city’s most influential citizens, threatening death unless a hefty sum is left in a tree at midnight. Robert Forrester, a recently returned army engineer from a distinguished family, finds himself the latest target of this chilling extortion. He meets his older confidant, Frederick Prentice, in an exclusive club, where they argue over whether to submit to the demand or fight back.

Forrester’s military service has left him wary of intimidation, yet his sense of duty and personal pride push him toward resistance. As the deadline looms, he must navigate a maze of clues, police indifference, and a criminal network that seems to operate under a veil of secrecy. The listener will be drawn into a tense cat‑and‑mouse game that tests loyalty, courage, and the cost of defying the invisible toll.
