ACT II
Scene I.—CAPTAIN ABSOLUTE's Lodgings. \[CAPTAIN ABSOLUTE and FAG.\]
In a bustling provincial town where reputation is as valuable as a coat of arms, a circle of fashionable youths gathers to indulge their appetites for love, drama, and competition. The story follows the swaggering Captain Jack Absolute, who vows to win the heart of the witty and resourceful Lydia while maintaining a secret identity to test her affection. Opposing him are the clever Mrs. Malvolio and a nervous suitor, each scheming to out‑maneuver the other in a series of sharp‑tongued exchanges and ridiculous misunderstandings.
The comedy thrives on the clash between pretended gallantry and genuine feeling, as duels are threatened over trivial slights and letters are penned in exaggerated prose. Sheridan’s sparkling dialogue exposes the vanity of his characters while celebrating the resilience of true affection. Listeners will be delighted by the rapid repartee and the charming chaos that erupts before any resolution is reached.

Witty, theatrical, and sharply observant, this Irish-born writer gave the English stage two of its most durable comedies: The Rivals and The School for Scandal. He also led a remarkably public second life as a celebrated orator, theatre manager, and member of Parliament.
