Three friends fresh out of high school find themselves thrust into the world of forest rangers, thanks to a promise from a timberland‑owning father. Their first assignment takes a sudden turn when they discover a remote shack occupied by three rough‑neck tramps who seize two of the boys, leaving the plump Dick to scramble for help. The ensuing chase ends with the trio’s capture, a hefty reward, and enough money to outfit themselves for the demanding life of fire patrol.
Now equipped and eager, the boys head into the Maine woods, where they quickly forge a bond with an experienced guide and encounter a mysterious “Hermit” who leaves cryptic notes. Their rugged terrain brings new allies and foes alike, setting the stage for a series of daring rescues and secret rivalries that will test both their courage and their friendship.
