Description

Alexander Lauderdale Jr. spends a crisp April Saturday in his polished office, his posture as precise as a well‑kept locomotive. Though he wears the mantle of a modest clerk, his family lineage traces back to philanthropists and millionaires, and his own fortunes are tangled in trust‑company dealings and charitable obligations. The old house on Clinton Place, inherited through generations, quietly frames a life balanced between inherited wealth and self‑imposed frugality.

Beneath his stern exterior, Alexander wrestles with the divergent paths of his two daughters. Charlotte, married to a prominent Nevada congressman, lives amid the bustle of Washington, while Katharine remains at home, navigating the expectations of a family steeped in tradition. Their choices clash with his rigid Presbyterian values, setting the stage for a domestic tug‑of‑war that will test the limits of duty, love, and personal integrity.
