About the author

Born in Bagni di Lucca, Tuscany, in 1854, Francis Marion Crawford grew up between Europe and the United States in a notably artistic family: his father was the American sculptor Thomas Crawford, and he was related to writer Julia Ward Howe. He studied in several countries and drew on that international background throughout his career, especially in fiction set in Italy.

Crawford’s breakthrough came with Mr. Isaacs in 1882, and he went on to become a remarkably prolific and successful author. He wrote dozens of novels, with readers especially remembering works such as the Saracinesca novels and his strange, elegant short fiction, including famous supernatural stories like The Screaming Skull.

He spent much of his adult life in Italy, where many of his best-known books found their atmosphere and setting. Crawford died in Sorrento in 1909, but his work still stands out for its lively storytelling and for the easy way it moves between romance, history, travel, and the uncanny.
