Description

When the accident strikes during Cordova’s spell‑binding rendition of the mad scene from Lucia, the audience is torn between awe and terror. The young soprano, draped in a lace‑adorned nightdress that flutters with each wild trill, seems to embody both genius and madness, her voice soaring to an impossible pitch as the theater lights dim. The sudden crash of shattered glass and a trembling explosion leave the hall in darkness, and a calm manager’s voice attempts to steady the panicked crowd.

Among the spectators sits an elderly connoisseur with iron‑grey hair, his sharp eyes recalling Cordova’s earlier triumphs in London and Paris. He remembers the flamboyant Greek financier Logotheti, who once tried to whisk her away, and the cultured English scholar Lushington, both fascinated by the rising star. Around them, New York society swarms, eager to claim the soprano as their own while gossiping and probing her private life. The novel follows Cordova’s struggle to maintain her artistic identity amid the glittering yet intrusive world of wealth, fame, and rumor.
