THE OLD MAN'S HOME.
The story opens on a secluded dell on the eastern edge of the Isle of Wight, where a massive landslip has created a sun‑kissed hollow shielded from winter’s bite. Wildflowers spill over shattered rock, and the calm bay beyond shimmers as if breathing gently with the tide. The narrator finds the place soothing, an allegory for how loss can make the heart receptive to a warmer, quieter light.
In this tranquil backdrop an old man appears, perched on a fallen cliff fragment, his silver hair and furrowed face a map of many years. He replies to the visitor’s simple question about the season with a quiet affirmation that even a long, dreary winter is brightened by flashes of coming spring. His weary voice then turns to a single, hopeful word—“home”—hinting at a journey of faith and memory that will unfold.
