Description

A determined traveler writes from a uniquely vivid perspective: though completely blind, he has honed his remaining senses to perceive the world with a startling clarity. After a naval career was cut short by a sudden illness, he turned his loss into a source of curiosity, exploring art, nature, and literature through touch, sound, and instinct. His dedication to Princess Augusta frames a narrative that balances humble gratitude with a bold claim to adventure.

In 1819‑21 he journeys across France, Italy, Savoy, Switzerland, the Rhine‑bordering German lands, and the Low Countries, recording the textures of bustling streets, the rhythm of distant bells, and the scent of alpine meadows. Companions and local guides become his eyes, while his detailed observations illuminate customs, architecture, and everyday life of the era. The result is a thoughtful travelogue that invites listeners to experience Europe not just visually, but through the full spectrum of human perception.
