Description

Step onto the lawless shores of 17th‑century Tortuga, where hunters become corsairs and the very air smells of gunpowder and sea‑salt. The book opens with a lively survey of the island’s tangled past, the clash of French, English and Spanish ambitions, and the gritty customs that forged the first buccaneers. Readers hear about the hunters’ rough dress, their wild games with boars and horses, and the stark contrast between plantation life and the raw freedom of the jungle.

From there the narrative moves to legendary figures such as the fearsome Pierre‑le‑Grand, whose daring captures turned him into a folk hero, and the ruthless Lolonnois, whose brutal tactics scarred towns from Maracaibo to Veragua. Through vivid anecdotes and first‑hand accounts drawn from contemporary journals, the author paints a picture of equality aboard ship, ruthless duels, and the relentless pursuit of plunder. All the while the tone remains that of a lively guide, inviting listeners to picture the swash‑buckling world without any modern gloss or melodrama.
