Bobby Burnit has spent his youth lounging in the comforts of a three‑million‑dollar inheritance, his days filled with idle amusements and the occasional flirtation with Agnes Elliston. When his stern father’s will forces him to take over the family store, the suddenly‑appointed businessman finds himself out of his depth, thrust into a world of ledgers, customers, and unexpected responsibility.
Determined to make a go of it, Bobby turns to Agnes for counsel, hoping her sharp judgment will compensate for his lack of experience. Their encounters are a mix of witty banter and awkward moments as Bobby fumbles through preparations, from arranging his office to navigating the social expectations of the Elliston household. The story follows his earnest, often humorous attempts to prove himself worthy of the trust placed in him, while hinting at a deeper connection forming between the two.

Best remembered for the wildly popular Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford stories, he moved easily from newspaper work into fiction, theater, and the early film world. His writing has a brisk, satirical energy that captures the hustle and ambition of turn-of-the-century America.
