Description

Bett‑Bett is a bright‑eyed eight‑year‑old who calls the endless Australian bush her palace. With her loyal dog Sue at her side, she navigates daily chores, playful rivalries and the ever‑present threat of the fierce “Debbil‑debbils” that haunt the riverbank. Her world is one of simple wonders—a fire made from twigs, a hidden water‑lily perch, and the quiet pride of outwitting danger when a chase forces her into the rushing Roper River.

When the hostile Willeroo tribe ambushes her camp, Bett‑Bett’s quick thinking leads her to hide beneath the water’s surface, holding her breath like a shadow until the pursuit passes. Emerging under a night sky, she and Sue scramble for food, coaxing a sizzling steak back to safety with clever tricks. Their whispered triumph is interrupted by a sudden, tense encounter with a stockman, hinting at the fragile balance between the bush and the settlers who are just beginning to notice her presence.
