Description

The story opens on a warm autumn afternoon in 1860, when the modest inn of Sestri‑Ponente bustles with travelers and locals alike. The narrator paints a vivid picture of the coastal town—its rugged beaches, fragrant orange groves, and a former noble villa now turned into a lively tavern—while hinting at the social shifts that are reshaping the region. Amid this backdrop, a young Jewish boy named Jacob arrives, eager to receive an education that promises both personal growth and a foothold in a world that often seems hostile to his heritage.

As Jacob settles into the inn’s simple comforts, he encounters a cast of characters whose ambitions and contradictions mirror the political turmoil of the era. A neighboring merchant, a curious innkeeper, and a charismatic traveler each offer glimpses of love, opportunity, and danger. Their interactions set the stage for Jacob’s early struggles to reconcile his devotion to family and faith with the alluring, but uncertain, promises of a changing Italy.
