Part 1
A crew of thirty Earth explorers lands on the bright, blue‑green plains of Engraham and quickly transforms their battered ship into a surprisingly luxurious outpost. With the help of liberated alien furniture and a makeshift bar, they turn the once‑sterile vessel into a country‑club‑like haven, complete with exotic fruit‑juices and comfortable lounges. The natives, initially frightened, return to find their village subtly altered, yet their courteous nature keeps the peace.
As the weeks roll on, the men find themselves caught between idle comfort and the weight of expectation. Their days are filled with poker games, late‑night discussions of Freud and Krafft‑Ebing, and occasional social calls to the locals, who ride them home in native hop‑hops. The supposed “hero” of the mission, Willy, becomes a figure of quiet ambiguity—his deeds are clear, but his loyalties remain puzzling. In this tranquil, almost surreal setting, the explorers confront the boredom of a mission without conflict, questioning what true heroism means when there is nothing left to conquer.

Best known today for the science-fiction story The Hero, this elusive writer left behind a sharp, imaginative tale that still feels lively decades after its first magazine appearance. Very little biographical information is readily available, which gives the work an added air of mystery.
