CHAPTER X. FROM THE NIGHT AND THE STORM.
The story opens amid the stark, beautiful clash of two ancient peaks—Brandon, golden and gentle, and Angry, dark and foreboding—whose long‑standing rivalry frames a fading aristocratic family. The Brandons, once caretakers of a thriving estate filled with deer, grouse and wild cattle, now count only seven healthy souls and face the painful prospect of selling their ancestral lands. Beneath the picturesque valleys, myths of ruthless De Lacys and haunted woods swirl, painting a world where history and superstition sit side by side.
Through the eyes of a young narrator, the narrative drifts into the secret world of a towering chestnut that grew through the abbey walls. From this leafy hideaway the narrator watches siblings and twins play, while the looming threat of Sir Rupert De Lacy and his bloodhounds casts a perpetual shadow. The tale balances fragile affection for a crumbling heritage with the uneasy tension of looming change, inviting listeners to linger in a landscape where beauty and dread coexist.
