The story opens on a bright summer at Sandy Bay, where Jess and Peggy—two spirited young aviators—are already scheming their next great adventure. With their friends Roy, Jimsy, and a collection of colourful aircraft nicknamed the Golden Butterfly, the Red Dragon, and Bess Marshall’s monoplane, they picture a graceful “sky cruise” that will take them over clouds like butterflies. Their banter is lively, full of youthful bravado and a sense that the sky itself is a playground waiting to be explored.
In the midst of their planning, a surprising letter arrives from Uncle Jack, inviting the quartet to a flying contest in Marysville, North Carolina. The invitation turns their casual summer pastime into a real competition, promising races, daring maneuvers, and the chance to prove their skills against other pilots. As the children prepare their machines and their courage, the stage is set for an exhilarating series of aerial trials that will test friendship, ingenuity, and the limits of early twentieth‑century flight.
