Description

John Grahame sets out from the quiet prairie town of Barliton just as a blue‑gray wall of clouds rolls in, turning a crisp, cold day into a ferocious Dakota blizzard. He walks, cap pulled low and coat reversed to shield against the gale, driven by thoughts of his wife Jane waiting by the stove, her face pressed to the frosted window. The storm assaults him with relentless wind and stinging snow, forcing him to balance his sled, horses, and a modest cargo of groceries while the world around him becomes a whiteout of whirling flakes.

Every step becomes a battle for survival as the sleigh’s runners scrape a fragile ribbon of packed snow that could mean life or death. Grahame’s hands freeze, his breath hangs in icy clouds, and the team of horses strains against the howling gale. In the midst of the storm he encounters another sled, its rider hidden beneath the drifts, hinting at the deeper struggles and fragile connections that the prairie’s unforgiving winter can reveal.
