About the author

Born in Bismarck, North Dakota, William Bigelow Neal was the son of Eugene Snow Neal and Nellie Bigelow Neal. North Dakota State University's special collections note that he attended North Dakota Agricultural College for three years and later owned a ranch near Garrison, North Dakota.

That close connection to the region shaped his writing. Contemporary and archival descriptions portray him as a North Dakota author known for wildlife stories, and NDSU records identify him as the author of Valley of the dammed and Last of the thundering herd.

His novel The Field of Amber Gold has also remained available through Project Gutenberg, helping keep his prairie-centered storytelling in circulation for modern readers. I couldn't confirm a reliable portrait photograph of him from the sources I checked, so no author image is included.
