Description

The story opens in a sweltering inn perched on the edge of a sheer gorge, the dry moat of Caylus Castle yawning below. Inside, the air is thick with the scent of rustic wine and the low murmur of travelers seeking refuge from the late‑September heat. Outside, the uneasy peace between France and its neighbors hangs like a thin veil, while a teenage Louis claims the throne under the watchful eye of a determined Cardinal Richelieu. The stage is set for a clash of ambition and loyalty.

In the inn’s common room seven men, each nicknamed for a devil of the establishment, cluster around a table laden with flagons. Their broad shoulders and easy swagger suggest soldiers, but the careful way they lay their rapiers aside hints at deeper schemes. Martine, the plain‑faced maid, serves them with quiet efficiency, her presence a subtle thread connecting the disparate personalities. As they drink and banter, the reader senses that old grudges and hidden agendas are simmering, ready to erupt into the melodramatic turmoil that defines the tale.
