Four friends set their sights on a canoe expedition, but the price of four brand‑new wooden canoes soon reveals a steep mountain of pennies far beyond their pocket‑money. Determined not to ask for a fortune from a well‑meaning uncle, they decide to sell their beloved sailboat, the Ghost, and hope for a lucky find to bridge the gap. A chance encounter with a generous schooner captain rewards them with a surprise envelope that finally puts the cash within reach, turning their dream into a real possibility.
With funds secured, the boys turn to the local canoe club for guidance. The club’s affable commodore, instead of picking a single “best” model, sends them to four seasoned paddlers, each championing a different design. The youngsters embark on a small yet exciting tour of opinions, learning the quirks of each craft while their camaraderie deepens. Their plan takes shape, and the river ahead looks inviting, promising the first true taste of adventure.
