Description

A reflective narrator, once a diligent student at Leyden, opens a dusty Horace and lets the past spill out in vivid, journal‑like recollections. Between 1685 and 1687 he is drawn from a sleepy London library into a web of interrupted letters, secret meetings, and a journey across Europe that leads him to the stark beauty of the Tyrol. Along the way he encounters an enigmatic countess, a loyal friend named Sir Julian Harnwood, and the intrigue of a foreign court that tests his courage and the ideals of an English gentleman.

The early chapters fuse scholarly banter with the restless heat of a summer day, then shift to moonlit vistas of Lukstein Castle and whispered negotiations in hidden pavilions. As Morrice navigates disguises, misunderstandings, and the delicate dance of courtship, the story balances romance with the tension of political uncertainty. Listeners are invited to share his dawning awareness that love and honor often require a daring gamble, even for a man accustomed to the quiet of university halls.
